The Search for the Fairy Princess is an original fairy tale, rather than an adaptation inspired by one of the traditional stories from the Brothers Grimm or elsewhere. The authors drew, in part, on family history as they created characters from the first half of the last century. In the story an old woman tells her young great grandchildren, the action shifts between depression-era Nebraska and the fairy world of Avalon, where the dragons are, as Bethany explains, “really mild-mannered beasts.”

Avalon is populated by goblins (including “the finest goblin poet of the age”), by trolls, and by an assortment of fairies, as well as the seldom seen but good-natured dragons. And they all await the return of the Fairy Princess, who has been away from Avalon for far too long.

While the story is a largely fanciful adventure, it also addresses real issues of life, of death, and of illness. As the young Nebraskans (Elissa, Thomas, and Bethany) search for the Fairy Princess, the search becomes both more important and more urgent for all concerned. Will they find her in time? Or will the sinister fairy Evander and his followers take over Avalon forever?

The script is suitable for audiences of all ages, and it provides opportunities for actors of all ages and experience levels. It can be produced using either a cast of young actors, a cast of teenage and adult actors, or a combination of young and old.
